رابی شکسپیر، از دو گروه افسانه‌ای ریتم رگی، اسلای و رابی، در سن 68 سالگی درگذشت.

او با آیکون هایی از جمله باب مارلی، پیتر توش و گریگوری آیزاکس کار کرده است و سال گذشته توسط مجله رولینگ استون به عنوان هفدهمین بیسیست برتر تاریخ انتخاب شد.

او به همراه درامر اسلی دانبار، فهرست بلندبالایی از نام‌های راک و پاپ، از جمله باب دیلن، میک جگر، پل مک‌کارتنی، تاکینگ هدز، مدونا، بریتنی اسپیرز، بدون شک و ساگز را تولید می‌کند یا با آنها همنوازی می‌کند.

شکسپیر که در سال 1953 در ایست کینگستون جامائیکا به دنیا آمد، با اسلای دانبار در اواسط دهه 1970 ملاقات کرد و آنها تأثیر زیادی بر موسیقی رگی و رقص هال گذاشتند.

او در دوران حرفه ای خود نامزد دریافت 13 جایزه گرمی شد و برنده دو جایزه گرمی شد.

نخست وزیر اندرو هولنز در توییتر نوشت: «وقتی نوازندگی باس رگی به میان می آید، هیچ کس به تأثیر رابی شکسپیر نزدیک نمی شود».

اولیویا گرانج، وزیر فرهنگ، که در بیانیه ای مرگ او را تایید کرد، گفت که او "از بزرگترین موسیقیدانان جامائیکا" است.

او گفت: "این تیم فوق العاده بیس و درام را به بالاترین سطح رساندند، زیرا آنها برای خود به عنوان یک گروه موسیقی و برای بسیاری از هنرمندان محلی و بین المللی موسیقی ساختند."

به گزارش جامائیکا گلینر، شکسپیر مدتی است که بیمار بوده و تحت عمل جراحی کلیه قرار گرفته و در بیمارستانی در فلوریدا بستری شده است.
